How to make a Lesson Plan in 5 minutes
Hi! I'm Kaja and I am an English teacher, and today I will show you how to make a lesson plan based on a completely random topic in just five minutes.
As an English teacher, I make a lot of small talk with my students and this is one of the topics I discussed with one of my students last week.
This draft is a result of a brainstorm that took me 5 minutes. It is easy to adapt and it is suitable for all age groups and levels.
You would want to start with a warm-up, so basically just ask questions related to the topic your student told you about. Don't forget follow-up questions to make the conversation more natural.
Then, I would move on to vocabulary. Don't forget to categorise the words to make it easier to brainstorm and remember.
It's a great idea to combine speaking, vocabulary and grammar to have some semi-controlled practice while giving your students the freedom to share their own opinions.
I love including videos in my lessons so I recommend choosing a short video related to the main idea of the lesson and using it to practice some listening comprehension. It's also a lovely invitation to more speaking practice.
Then, something that my students love the most - more speaking. Choose any random debate topic related to the lesson and discuss it. If you're teaching a group it's a great way to get your students to discuss it together so you can sit and relax ;)
Functional Language is one of the most important bits your students need to practice so create a situation and have them role-play together (or with you if you're teaching a 121 class).
For homework you could combine reading, writing and speaking and ask your students to for example "Find a house they like and have them present it next time"
And there you go! A full lesson plan based on just one random small talk sentence.

”I used this with an adult ELL tutee of mine. I appreciate that the language was accessible for multiple proficiency levels, but the content wasn't obviously geared for children and still useful for older learners.”

”Another great resource from Handy English! I used it to give my students more in-depth practise into quantifiers and restaurant language. It's great resource and can be used after the students learn the basics of language for the restaurants and quantifiers. Definitely helped solidify what they learnt.”

”Love this resource. Great for fast finishers and also those in small ESL groups. Great for all macro skills as discussion and brainstorming is a great precursor for writing submissions.”
